Interview: Turin Brakes

Currently on tour with their hugely successful seventh studio album Lost Property, we caught up with Turin Brakes’ lead singer ahead of their summer festival tour which will see them playing at the likes of Camp Bestival and Isle of Wight Festival.

Hi Olly! First of all, thanks so much for agreeing to do this interview with us! There’s been a phenomenal response to your latest album Lost Property, how does this album compare to your previous albums for you?

It’s basically just a bit more aware of a wider audience. We pushed our ideas and the production as far as possible, making a safer record for us wasn’t really what we wanted so we just went for it and it seems to have been well received.

So who would you say your music is most influenced by?
The stuff we heard from America when we were growing up. 70’s Rock and folk from the west coast, but we fuse it with the 21st century.
You’ve already been confirmed for the likes of Camp Bestival and, of course, the Isle of Wight Festival this summer, what can fans expect from these festival sets?
We like to please people, so expect a healthy dose of old classics and the most exciting new stuff. It’s a big, wide, soulful, sound live.
What do you like to request on your rider at festivals?
We can pretty much survive off bananas, almond butter and brandy these days!
Who else are you looking forward to seeing perform at the Isle of Wight Festival?
I’ve heard the Quo are doing it? My inner child is very very excited by this news… I’d like them to do that “In The Army” tune because I loved it, but I doubt it’s on the set.
So you’ve just announced details of a 2016 winter tour, what other plans have you got for the future?

We’re very excited about the festival season, it’s been a long time since we did a big run. Other than this, we are very zen these days and go day by day. I can’t wait to see Italy again in April and Germany has always been very good to us.

You can catch Turin Brakes throughout the summer at the following festivals:
  • Isle of Wight Festival, 11th June
  • Cornbury Festival, 9th July
  • Camp Bestival, 29th July
  • Belladrum Festival, 6th August
